Review: 13th Moon - Volume 3

Phoebe Xavier and Bayron Calderon of 123GO! Publications bring you another dose of horror comic delights with the 45-page third volume of the 13th Moon anthology. This generous helping is another diverse collection of different styles and tones to intrigue and delight.

Luci and the Doombringers Part II continues the story of the Devil's daughter (a typical heavy metal/Goth teen who just happens to sport a huge pair of horns) and her witchy band mates.

Trouble vs Cthulhu is something of a genre-bender, pitting a 25th century super heroine and her geek hacker girl pal against an ancient cosmic deity, duking it out in a city on the Moon. Eldritch magic vs (literally) cutting-edge nanotechnology....The pages pop with energetic manga visuals and upbeat wisecracks.

A darker vibe comes next with Fukushu, a Yakuza revenge tale in which the spirit of a murdered woman visits justice upon her killers in a series of gruesome, gory encounters... more Ringu than manga, with a splash of body horror in stark monochrome.

Vengeance is also the theme in The Butcher of Canaan, in which a powerful young Nephilim rampages through the Old Testament land that wronged his human mother. Anak struggles with his conscience... "One does not damn a people for the actions of a few."  ... but soon he is slaying the unworthy and wielding his ogre-forged blade against angels.

Fever Dreams takes us back to the future and the dark dimension of Alien/Event Horizon territory. A long lost space station emerges from hyperspace after many years' absence. Are there any survivors, or is it now home to something from a nightmare realm beyond space and time? A group of soldiers board the station for a recon mission, but will their high-powered rifles be of any use against what awaits them?

In Brunch, a young woman is stalked by a menacing stranger, gradually drawing closer and closer. Nobody can help her deal with this threat because nobody except her can see him. With this chilling premise, our heroine is isolated from any hope of rescue... but what does the eerie figure want from her?
